Brandon Davies was dismissed from the No. 3 ranked BYU basketball team this week as a result of breaking the school’s Honor Code.
Davies had sex with his girlfriend. When I hear a story of a player being dismissed from their college team for the remainder of the season, I immediately ask, what did he/she do?
The answers usually have something to do with drugs, alcohol, criminal behavior or my personal favorite, “conduct detrimental to the team.”
Days after Sports Illustrated and CBS News revealed that seven percent of college football players on last year’s preseason Top 25 teams had a criminal record, BYU, the No. 3 ranked college basketball team in the nation, dismisses one of its best players for having premarital sex, which is certainly not a crime.
BYU follows different standards than the majority of schools in America. In many college athletic programs, honor takes a back seat to winning. Unlike many other schools, though, BYU stands by its standards.
With the loss of Davies, BYU’s hope for national title took a huge hit. He was the third-leading scorer on the team as well as the team’s top rebounder.
In its first game without Davies, BYU was blown out by New Mexico, 82-64.
Here’s a look at the BYU Honor Code that students are required to comply with:
- Be honest.
- Live a chaste and virtuous life.
- Obey the law and all campus policies.
- Use clean language.
- Respect others.
- Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse.
- Participate regularly in church services.
- Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards.
- Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code.
UPDATE: Brandon Davies girlfriend, Danica Medivil, is a volleyball player at Arizona State University. Maybe Davies will transfer???
