Over a century after the gallery’s establishment, the CEO of the Art Gallery of Ontario decided in 2003 that the building would undergo a massive remodeling project with the help of Frank Gehry. Characteristic to art galleries, Gehry couldn’t simply deconstruct the building as he saw fit–he was required to build around existing structures and expansions and unite them all architecturally.

Once it was completed, Gehry was praised for the restraint he showed in his designs and for how well he was able to blend his own additions into the previous structures.

According to Gehry, the design of the building is meant to emulate various guitars.
