Ron Rivett, the renowned American entrepreneur and founder of Super 8 Motels and My Place Hotels, passed away in his home town of Aberdeen, South Dakota. Born from modest beginnings, Rivett’s perseverance and commitment helped him build an empire that would leave a lasting impact on the hospitality industry.

In 1974, Rivett, along with his business associate Dennis Brown, opened the first Super 8 motel in Aberdeen. The budget-friendly chain rapidly expanded, and by 1993, Super 8 had over 1,000 locations.

Rivett’s influence didn’t stop at Super 8. He also co-founded My Place Hotels, which began in Aberdeen and continues to expand nationally. His innovative spirit and dedication to providing quality, affordable lodging has left an indelible mark on the industry.

Jason Welk, son-in-law of Rivett and owner of the three Aberdeen Super 8 locations, spoke of a “long 30 years of history,” highlighting the enduring legacy Rivett leaves behind.

The community of Aberdeen and the broader hospitality industry mourn the loss of this visionary leader. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Ron Rivett during this challenging time.
